NANTUCKET POST PROGRAM,

Expressions of Interest

SEP 86 Reunion 2008

We have mentioned to you the idea of a post-program to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.  We need to know how many of you would be interested in adding this to our reunion.

Nisland

Nantucket is an Island about 20 miles out to sea from Cape Cod.  It was the whaling capital of the United States in the 1840s, and much wealth was obtained by the then mainly Quaker ship owners. The town of Nantucket has many fine examples of ship Captain’s houses, the streets in town are still stone paved as then, and it has become a vacation destination for many affluent people from around the US (with, of course, many fine shops and restaurants to cater to the visitors).  It retains the charm of its remoteness, its architecture, and its character.

We are proposing a post-program to visit Nantucket, dependent upon your interest,

spending two nights on the Island, and returning to Boston at the end.

We expect that the cost of this post-program will be ~$2,000US per couple (including the extra hotel night in Boston), less for singles.

Here is our tentative agenda:

Thursday, October 2

This is the day we return from New Hampshire and people will depart for home or stay another night in Boston.  Those that want to go to Nantucket would spend the night in Boston at our Hotel in Copley Place.

Friday, October 3

The bus will leave the hotel about 9:30, driving to Hyannisport on Cape Cod. We will board a ferry top Nantucket for a trip that will take about an hour on a “fast ferry”.( The ferry ride itself is a delight, especially as you leave Cape Cod and as you approach the Island).  Lunch will be on the ferry.  We arrive in Nantucket Town in the early afternoon; we check in to the Jared Coffin House close to the wharf and check in.  You are free to walk around the scenic town (shop if you want), see the Whaling Museum, the wharfs, the houses, etc., and meet back at the hotel at 6:30PM for cocktails before walking to our restaurant nearby.  Back to the hotel at your leisure

Saturday, October 4

Breakfast at the hotel.  We will board some minibuses for a tour of the Island.  (Those intrepid souls who want to can rent bikes and tour the Island by themselves).  We will visit all ends of the Island.  We will have a chance to walk around the old Portuguese

fishing village of Siasconset  with its quaint alleys and  fine cottages, and have lunch at an elegant restaurant at the head of the Harbor.  We will come back to town about 3 PM with free time until a reception and dinner at 7PM.

Sunday, October 5

Breakfast at the hotel.  We will assemble in the lobby at 11AM and walk to our “traditional” ferry back to Cape Cod.  We will arrive in Hyannisport at 2:15 PM , board our bus, and be back in Boston by no later than 5PM so you can catch your flights back home.
